1940 - syntax

derivational morphemes
lexical meanings' difference; Or shift of classes (not always happen in all cases); open class
inflectional morphemes
grammatical meanings shift; close class.

重點:詞彙是先跟derivational morphemes結合,才結合inflectional morpheme
(先改變word class(意義產生), 而非word category)

1940的意思是今天加油站工作的事情。今天我虧了1940元。

形容詞在名詞之前的用法是attribute,舉例:main。無法用在名詞之後。
用在名詞之後的用法稱為predicated。舉例:beautiful可在前面,也可在後面。

lexical / functional category
Prep, N, V (都是open category,常常是實詞), adj(有些形容詞) / adj, adv (語法上的、tense, number, singular, plural…)

Mary wrapped a blanket around her
Mary gave a blanket to her.
第一句的her可以是Mary自己,但第二句的就不行。因為around這個perp其實有lexical meaning,不像下面的to是單純的grammatical perp. 仔細看,to的的用途是標記一個dativ,通常作為grammatical 用途(case marker)

大部分的perp其實都有lexical meaning,所以是實詞。中文中的「把」、「給」,就是這樣,而不是單純當標記語用。英文的「格」概念不強。

some functional categories of English

  • Auxiliaries 有tense: have/has/had, am/is/are, etc
  • Modal: will, should, can, might....
  • Non-finite tense marker: to (佔據tense的位置,卻沒有tense)

Negation: not

中文裡面:量詞和量化詞(quantifier,幾「條」魚)不一樣。但詳細我就不知道了。

will 其實不是未來式,而是一種modality, 接近may, might,對未來的一種看法。
The train leaves at 9am tomorrow. (非常肯定,幾乎是事實)
The train will leave at 9am tomorrow. (對未來的看法)

Tense 其實只有兩種;past+ 和past-
然後再往下細分

搞清楚valancy和論元在linguistics上的關係

adjunct補語 和 argument 的區分 (有些語言分得很明確,但南島語系就沒有)

We are waiting for Lisa
We are waiting in the classroom

注意用詞性一樣的(都是PP)來替代測試,會發現這兩個句子的後面不同且不能替代、合用(不能用and相連)。用conj來連接,也會發現這種情況:
"We are waiting for Lisa and in the classroom"

We are waiting for Lisa 其實是 argument,補充了非常必要的資訊 (手足,而非衣服adjunct)
他形成了一種Phrasal verb 。
